Chennai: Sewage water is flooding the roads of Muthunaicken Street in George

Town.

The road is full of potholes, and garbage is out in the open, which is creating a health hazard

for the people.

Shabana, who comes to work at a house daily, said that the situation has been like this for two

years now. “It is difficult to walk and come.”

Sana, who works with her mother in a tailor shop, said that the sewage water is always on the

road. Her mother said that there is always a bad smell around the street.

The area has few residents and is used majorly for commercial purposes.

Mohammad Shoaib, who works in the area, said that there are around 14-15 transport offices,

four-five godowns, and six-seven shops.

He said, “The sewage on the road has become a breeding ground for mosquitoes.”

“When it rains, the garbage in the open goes inside the manhole,” Shoaib said.

The overflow of sewage on the road, especially during rains, is the cause of health problems

among the people here, he added.

Mainoona, a resident, said that the sewage water is always on the road.

“During rains, the sewage gets mixed with rainwater, which enters the bore well.”

The sewage water seeps inside our homes during rains, she added.

Bharat, whose office Srigayathri Agencies is first on the street, said, “The damaged roads are

also inconvenient to ride on.”

The road is full of stone as the blacktopped surface of the road has come off.

Sathyaraj said due to the damage of a sewage pipe, water was coming out for the past four

days.

“I have filed a complaint to clean it and expect them to do it by tomorrow.”

Prabhu, a businessman, said that the customers sometimes complain about the sewage water

on the road. Due to the water outside, it is inconvenient to drop the business material.

Amit, who owns a godown in the area, said that while the corporation says that they would

not handle the pipelines owned by individuals, the residents say that it is not their fault.

“We have complained many times to the corporation office, but nothing happens,” Mainoona

said. They come and clean, but the situation is the same again, the following day.

Residents said that the corporation does a temporary solution, due to which the problem

emerges again.
