Chennai: Chennai Corporation’s flood mitigation work has created a new

mosquito breeding in upmarket Alwarpet. In November last year, the corporation dug the

corner near Winners Bakery in Alwarpet, situated at the intersection of C P Ramaswamy

Road and C V Raman Road, to drain flood water.

The dug up portion is yet to be re-built leading to one half of the entrance to the bakery being

blocked. So, customers cannot park the vehicles inside, this leads to traffic congestion in the

busy junction.

There is only one entrance and exit gate due to the drainage, which has become a problem,

Ramki said.

Bala Subramanian, CEO of Winners Bakery said, “The customer cannot come in four-

wheelers, which has reduced our sales in the past few months.”

The mosquitoes are breeding due to the stagnation of water in the drainage.

Subramanian said that the corporation has to approve a tender.

Ramki said that he had complained many times to the Storm Water Drain department,

Greater Chennai Corporation. The officials have visited the place many times; however,

nothing has been done, he added.

Venkat, a customer at the bakery said that he has returned after three months and the situation

is still the same.

There is congestion on the road many times during the day.

Ramu, a resident of the area said, “This is the route the Chief Minister takes, and also many

senior officials, but nobody seems to care.”

Rajanikamth, junior engineer officer, said that the corporation is finalising a tender, and the

work to cover the dug out area will start within 20 days.

“The budget for Seethammal colony, TT Krishnamachari Road, C P Ramaswamy Road, and

Dr Ranga road will be ₹15-16 crores,” he added.
